Many places offer direct VHS to DVD transfer, but I go one step further.  I can take your old home movies on VHS or Hi-8, and make them look better.  Now understand, they won't be HD quality, but I can improve brightness, color saturation, sound level and quality.  And you know that video noise you see on tapes, kind of like "snow" or grainy film?  I can significantly reduce that, which vastly increases picture quality.  I can save it to WMV, MOV, MP4, M4V, or almost any filetype, or burn it to DVD.

Obviously, you can see the color/brightness difference, but see the video noise in her hair in the BEFORE?  It's gon in the AFTER.
The original was recorded on VHS in EP (SLP - 6 hour) made back in the 1990's and this gives an example of the improvements.
Granted, most likely your home videos aren't animated, so on to the humans!
